Scandaletti Masterclass Wraps: Classics Reimagined, Tradition Ignited

Legacy through Art, Classics through Collaboration | Masterclass by Tiziana Scandaletti Successfully Concludes

To deepen pedagogical exchange in music and elevate the artistic calibre of both faculty and students, the School of Digital Music Industry invited Riccardo Piacentini and Tiziana Scandaletti—chair-holders at Milan’s Conservatorio “Giuseppe Verdi”—to conduct a public vocal masterclass and Beethoven-focused rehearsal. Prof. Li Chenjie, Dean of the School, oversaw the entire session, while Associate Dean Liu Minghui of the Conservatory visited to greet participants and offer guidance. All young teachers slated to perform in the New-Year concert sat in, working face-to-face with the international maestros to mine the essence of classical vocal art.

Scandaletti, an internationally acclaimed soprano with twenty-five discs for Ariston-Ricordi, Curci and other major labels, has long immersed herself in the study and interpretation of Italian vocal literature. Using Beethoven’s vocal oeuvre as her axis and the forthcoming concert repertoire as her laboratory, she addressed breath management, emotional projection and stylistic interpretation.

Focusing on the performance challenges young faculty faced in Four Ariettas and a Duet and Under the Silent Moon, Scandaletti dissected breath control and vocal blending through live demonstration and line-by-line coaching. Drawing on her interpretation of Beethoven, she outlined the “voice carries emotion” logic of classical singing, urging performers to ground themselves in the works’ background before layering on distinctive artistic expression.

The participating young faculty posed questions on technical roadblocks and contemporary approaches to canonical repertoire, engaging the maestro in extended dialogue. Scandaletti affirmed their professional poise and urged them to balance fidelity to tradition with ongoing creative exploration. The exchange was vigorous; instructors left noting that the session dispelled performance uncertainties and broadened artistic horizons, offering fresh pedagogical and interpretative pathways for their future teaching and stage work.

The masterclass forms a key plank in the University’s drive for international artistic dialogue and faculty development. By continuously leveraging practice-based platforms and inviting world-renowned artists, the institution ensures its community remains exposed to cutting-edge concepts and pedagogies, steadily raising the benchmark for music-education excellence.
